I use the heavybag at Catalyst Fitness for my kicks and punches.  It’s a good tool and you don’t have to worry about injuring a person while you’re training.  A nice complementary item to go along with it would be a speedbag.  It allows one to work on hand timing and speed.  It works the hands, arms and shoulders, too.  My workout partner, Denise, is a master on the speedbag and has really neat routines she does on it.  She taught some basics to me 5 years ago that I still use when I use a speedbag.
